Obituary of Madison Davis

James Madison Davis, known to friends and loved ones, as Matt, was born on November 16,1947 in Holly Springs, Mississippi. He was the eldest child of the late James and Aselue (Stewart) Davis.  Matt accepted Christ at an early age at Smith Grove Baptist Church in Holly Springs, Mississippi.  He was a senior member of Calvary C.M.E. Church in Painesville, Ohio where he was a member of the Steward Board, director of the Male Chorus, and a bible study instructor.  Matt started singing Gospel music at an early age and formed his first group “The Golden Tones” with his brother Larry Davis in 1961.  Soon after, Matt and his brothers started singing together as the Davis Brothers and shared their music and voices throughout Lake County and surrounding areas for over 40 years.  Matt was a graduate of Harvey High School.  He worked as a lineman and trainer at First Energy for over 40 years. After retirement, he continued to serve the community as a bus driver for Lake Tran County transit.   He enjoyed golfing, traveling, bowling, and was an avid sports fan.  He is survived by his children, Tammy Khattak, Toby Davis, Greg Davis, Fredricka "Dee" Betts (Don), and Tracy Klain; grandchildren, Cameron Khattak, Hailey Davis, Alyssa Davis, Trevor Davis, Alexa Jones, Alex Griego, Lydia Campbell, and Jordyn Klain; great-grandchildren, Jaycub Campbell, Daryl Kessler, and Monty Kessler; siblings, Johnnie Mae (John) Wooten, Larry (Jeri) Davis, Hillie (Marek) Jaworski, and Joelle (Joshua) Calhoun. He is the beloved uncle of many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. James Madison passed away on December 19, 2022 at David Simpson Hospice House.   He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Gene Davis, Glenn Davis, and Anthony Darnell Davis.  He will be truly missed by relatives and friends.

A visitation will be Thursday, December 29, 2022 from 5-8PM at Johnson Funeral Home, 368 Mentor Ave., Painesville, Ohio 44077. A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 30, 2022 at Noon at Painesville United Methodist Church, 71 N. Park Place, Painesville, Ohio 44077
