Obituary of Shirley Ellen Weitzel
Shirley E. Weitzel, age 93, peacefully passed away on September 3, 2022. She was born February 17, 1929, in Cleveland to Edward and Hilda (Maynard) Bucholtz.
A resident of Concord Township since age 7, Shirley attended Concord Elementary and graduated in 1947 from Harvey High School. She was an original member of the Lake County Farmers Conservation Club. For many decades, Shirley and her husband, Jim, operated Hermitage Hill Kennel. A classic mom from the 50’s and 60’s, she was a great cook who prepared many meals for clients, friends, and family. Everyone looked forward to her peach dumplings, crepes, and holiday houska. Through the many years, Shirley supported her husband in his teaching and coaching career at Harvey High, as well as his subsequent career as a professional retriever trainer. She enjoyed traveling the field trial circuit, hosting family gatherings, antiquing, and hooking rugs. In her later years, she kept busy playing bridge at Hellriegel’s with her lovely group of friends. Shirley’s greatest pleasure, however, was being Grandma to her three grandchildren and great-granddaughter.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Weitzel and brother, David Bucholtz. She is survived by her son James, her daughter Kay (Craig) Deighan, grandchildren Clint (Katie) Weitzel, Jen (Paul) Safick, Craig (KC) Deighan, great-granddaughter Reagan Weitzel, sister-in-law Anne Bucholtz, and the families of nieces Margot Bucholtz, Debbie (Doug) Justus, and nephew David (Kris) Bucholtz. She will be missed also by her loving granddogs Dunkin and Finn.
A private family memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial cotributions are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
