Obituary of Thomas Michael O'Brien

Thomas Michael O'Brien, age 80 of Perry, died peacefully on November 13, 2021 at his home. He was born on September 18, 1941 in East Cleveland to the late Claude and Helen (nee: Dunnigan) O'Brien. Tom was a proud graduate of Shaw High School and went on to earn his Bachelor's from Cleveland State University and also served in the U.S. Navy as a naval meteorologist. Tom owned and operated Sugar and Spice Restaurant at Severance Center in Cleveland Heights and worked for Kaiser Engineers at the Perry Power Plant. Tom retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 25 years of working for the Willoughby and Willowick Post Offices where he supported and served as treasurer of the Postal Union. He enjoyed motorcycles, bike riding, camping, coaching Tee-Ball, and woodworking. He received recognition from Willowick and Deepwood Industries for his philanthropic work. Tom never met a stranger and will be remembered for his gift of gab showing his genuine, kind character to everyone he met. Throughout his life he lit up every room he was in with his Irish whit, charm and love. He is survived by his wife and best friend of 53 years, Loyola (nee: Mancine) O'Brien; children, Michael (Barbara Davis) O'Brien, Daniel (Stacey) O'Brien, Catherine (Robert) Jarzenski, Mary O’Brien Gerred, and Paula (John) Tomanovich; grandchildren, Jason (Brandy) O’Brien, Charlie Gerred, Shannon Tomanovich (Phillip Scarpone), Joe Tomanovich (Nina Ruangsinsup, fiancé), Kevin Tomanovich, and Julia Tomanovich (Stan McWest, fiancé); great-grandchildren, Gracey, Bella and Bentley and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Patrick O'Brien; sister, Jane (Stan) Marszal; and granddaughter, Kayleigh O'Brien. Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 18, 2021 from 4-8PM at Johnson Funeral Home, 368 Mentor Ave., Painesville, Ohio 44077. A funeral service with military honors will be Friday, November 19, 2021 at 11:00AM at the funeral home.
