Obituary of Sarah Elizabeth Simmons

Sarah Elizabeth Simmons “Life does not come with a manual, it comes with a mother” and our mother, Sarah Elizabeth (Chamberlain) Simmons, passed in the company of her family and love ones and entered her heavenly home on March 7, 2021 and was reunited with her husband, Kirk, and six siblings. She was born February 8, 1926, in Brighton, Michigan, the fifth child of Floyd Alfred Chamberlain and Elba Mae (Rogers) Chamberlain. Her siblings included sisters Ruth (1915-1977), Rella (1923-2012) and Millicent (1936-2020); brothers Ralph (1916-2009); Richard (1924-1994) and Henry (1929-2010). Sarah was a graduate of Ann Arbor High School. On May 9, 1953, she married Robert Kirk Simmons, at the Covenant Baptist Church in Detroit. They were married for 52 years before his death in 2006. Sarah worked for the Department of the Army in Detroit during World War II, and later for the food service at Towmotor in Mentor and Avery Dennison in Concord. She enjoyed travel with her husband to Fiji, Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii. She enjoyed R.K.Simmons family golf outings and traveling to Gulf Shores, Alabama, with siblings and their spouses. “Motherhood is a verb. It is something you do, not just who you are.” Growing up on the family farm in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Sarah learned about hard work and life skills from her mother which were beneficial in raising the five children she and Kirk were blessed with and raised in Mentor, Ohio. Kenneth (Lisa Diemert), Clifford (Connie); twin sons Keith (Kristal), and Kevin; and daughter Leslie. She has 6 grandchildren. William, Brian, Kyle, Thomas, Julie and Mary. Four step-grandchildren, Douglas Scott, Corry Scott, Christopher Diemert, and Alex Diemert. Three step-great grandchildren, David, Elizabeth, and Robert. Visitation will be held Thursday, March 11 from 6-8 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home, 368 Mentor Avenue, Painesville. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with burial following in Mentor Cemetery.
