Obituary of Coletta Hitzel

Coletta Jane Hitzel (nee Wolff) age 92, born February 18, 1928 passed away April 30, 2020. She was the loving daughter of August and Angeline Wolff; sister Rita Pesano; step-sister Thelma Mackey; and step-brother Harold Wolff (all deceased).Coletta was born in Fairport Harbor, OH. Her grandfather (August, Sr.) served as mayor of Fairport, and was considered one of the grandest old pioneers of this small village. Her father (August, Jr.) started managing the family coal and ice business at age 16 and was best known as Fairport’s one-man orchestra playing 22 instruments without a single lesson. Coletta's mother (Angeline) cooked from her large farm garden from which she canned its bounty. She raised chickens that provided lots of eggs and the occasional Sunday chicken for dinner. Angeline was a business woman, helping run the coal and ice business along with running her seamstress business. These experiences and skills were passed on to Coletta helping her to become a wonderful cook and an expert seamstress. Following family tradition, Coletta was also a musician. Growing up, she played the piano with her father and sister Rita in the “Auggie Wolff Band”. Rita continued to perform professionally. As a teenager, Coletta played the clarinet and saxophone in the school bands at Harvey High School. One of Coletta’s highlights was marching and playing during football games at the Harvey Alumni Marching Band reunions with her children and grandchildren. She continued to play piano at family functions throughout her life. Coletta graduated from Harvey High School and the Cleveland Academy of Cosmetology earning her license as a beautician. She worked with Lee Martin and Betty Catalano in their Beauty Salons and later worked at Gary Allen Sportswear. Coletta was married to her beloved husband, Robert (Bob, deceased), for 58 years. Bob and Coletta were the loving parents of 5 children: Roberta (Buff) Parker, Wapakoneta, OH; Thomas (Sandy, deceased) Hitzel, Painesville, OH; Robert “Bert” (Joan) Hitzel, Urbandale, IA; C. Frances (Joseph) Gagliano, Eastlake, OH; and Brian Hitzel (deceased). The Hitzel family has grown with 8 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. In later years, Coletta was a second mom to nephew and niece David and Shar Pierce of Concord, OH. Coletta and her husband Bob hosted many functions at their home including card clubs, line dancing, and family gatherings where there was always good food, music and merriment. They enjoyed family vacations on the beach and boardwalk in Wildwood, NJ. Once their children were older, Coletta and Bob started traveling to such destinations as Europe, Alaska, Hawaii, and the Grand Canyon. During retirement, Coletta and Bob eventually wintered in Marco Island, FL where they taught line dancing to other snow birds. In her later years, Coletta enjoyed Tuesday night dinners with her Florida friends and also enjoyed occasional trips to local casinos playing “fun” slot machines with her granddaughter Angela. Coletta was a member of the Painesville United Methodist Church. Other interests included growing house plants and flowers, and was an avid seamstress.
